What is OpenAthens?
OpenAthens is an authentication method that provides a secure and effective way to access the library's licensed online resources.
Visit the page below for more information:
When selecting links from the SAE University College Library, Discovery (the library's search engine) and online learning and teaching environments, follow the two (2) step guidance below:
1. Choose option a) or option b), depending on which screen appears;
a) Find your Institution and choose how to sign in.
b) Choose how to sign in: Select the appropriate sign-in option

OpenAthens not only provides access through the SAE University College Library website and campus online environments, but you can now also log in directly via some publisher websites.
If you start your research from a Google search or go to your favourite database or publisher website (for example, Taylor & Francis or JSTOR), you will be able to sign in with your SAE login directly on the website using OpenAthens authentication.
Please note that the SAE Library may not provide direct access to every journal article or publication that you come across on the publisher websites.
Also, remember not all publishers provide access using OpenAthens; use the following library links for access:
- from the library website; or
- follow the prompts on the appropriate publisher's website for access. Please note that each publisher's login options will slightly differ. Look out for the following variations in the options below:
1. Select the appropriate login option from the publisher's website.
This is usually found in the top right of the screen.
The options may display similarly to the examples shown below:
Examples of Login Options

2. Navigate to the Institutional option and follow the prompts.
You may be asked to search for and select your institution; type SAE and select the SAE option from the list. See some of the examples below for options you may encounter.

3. Use the OpenAthens option for access.
4. You may be directed to the SAE login page.
If you encounter the SAE login page (which also occurs when accessing resources directly from the library website or within SAE learning and teaching systems, e.g. Campus Online), please see the instructions above (Access Library resources via OpenAthens).

LinkedIn Learning is an American online learning platform providing video courses taught by industry experts in software, creative, and business skills. It offers courses on various topics that fall into one of the following four categories: Business, Creative, Technology, and Certifications.
Accessing LinkedIn Learning
You can activate and gain access to LinkedIn Learning in 2 different ways.
By Invitation
- You may receive an invitation to LinkedIn Learning via email (this is either your @sae email address or the email address your school communicates with you via).
- Select the activation link and follow the prompts from the Type in your email instructions below.
Self-Activation
- Not available to Australian staff.
- Open a browser and go to: www.linkedin.com/learning
- Select "Sign In" from the top right-hand corner of the screen.

- Type in your “SAE” email.

- Select the appropriate option below:
- You will now see either a Google or Microsoft Single Sign-On window. Please enter your credentials as you usually would and follow all instructions.
Please note: SAE Australian Staff will use their Navitas Login: awesome.person@navitas.com
- If you see your account name in the top right-hand corner of the LinkedIn Learning homepage, you have successfully logged into LinkedIn Learning.
If you have a personal LinkedIn account, you can choose to connect it with your SAE LinkedIn Learning account for a more personalised learning experience. Please note that you don't need to own or connect a LinkedIn profile to use LinkedIn Learning; connecting accounts is optional. Connected accounts can be disconnected anytime using the steps outlined here.
How do I connect my accounts?
During the activation process, you will be presented with an option to connect your personal LinkedIn account with your LinkedIn Learning account. To do so, you'll be asked to log in to your personal LinkedIn account and to confirm your account.
Should you choose not to connect your accounts during the activation stage, you can do so anytime by following these steps:
-
Log in to LinkedIn Learning.
-
Click "Me" in the top right corner, and select "Settings " from the drop-down menu.
-
Select "Connect your LinkedIn account to your LinkedIn Learning account provided by your organisation", and click "Connect my account".
-
Log in to LinkedIn Learning again.
-
If you agree to the Terms and Privacy Policy, click "Accept and continue".
See the Benefits of connecting your LinkedIn profile with Learning.
Please note:
- Once you graduate and no longer have access to LinkedIn Learning via SAE, and you previously linked your accounts, you will still be able to keep your Learning history and Certificates of Completion.
- If you connect your accounts, then every time you try to log in to LinkedIn Learning, you will also need to log in to your LinkedIn profile. This means you will have to log in to both accounts if you only wish to access LinkedIn Learning content.
- Even though SAE LinkedIn Learning profiles may be linked with personal LinkedIn profiles, LinkedIn profiles are separate from the LinkedIn Learning platform and are not managed by SAE.

What is Primo Search?
Primo is a search tool for finding books, ebooks, journal articles, theses, open-access resources and more.
It's a great place to start searching for information for your assessment tasks and to find readings recommended by your lecturer.
You can also use Primo Search to place and manage digitisation and document delivery requests.
Use the guide below to help you get started with Primo and make the most of its search capabilities.
Begin your search from the SAE Library homepage.
Search:
These basic search tips will help you get started in Primo:
- Searching for a particular known resource? Try entering just the title instead of using the full citation.
- Simple search defaults to searching all types of sources. Filter by selecting books or articles to narrow your results.
- Leave out punctuation. If you are searching for a particular topic, put in the most relevant words first.
- When using Boolean operators in a more advanced search, remember to capitalise AND, OR & NOT.
- Check your spelling!
- Use individual Library A-Z Databases & E-resources to explore more specific discipline-related content.
Start a search using:
- the name or author of your resource; OR
- one of two keywords from an assignment topic

Search operators are combinations of words and symbols that refine your search results. You can combine search terms with the Boolean operators AND, OR, and NOT to broaden or narrow your results. Boolean operators are used to link your keywords to give you greater control over the number of records you find. They must be written in UPPERCASE so they are not treated as keywords.
See more information on how to use Boolean Operators here.
The Advanced Search option in Primo offers many features for making your searches more precise to get results that are more relevant and useful.
Advanced Search Primo

1. Field selector:
For each search line, this parameter allows you to narrow the search to all search fields or a particular field (such as title, author, or subject).
2. Search type:
For each search line, this parameter indicates how your search terms are compared against the search field. You can choose from the following options:
- contains - Returns results that contain all words in the phrase, but the words may be in a different order and may not be as close together.
- contains exact phrase - Returns results that contain phrases that exactly match the phrases specified in the query.
- starts with – Returns results that contain words that start with the specified string of words.
3. Boolean Operators:
As with basic searches, you can include the AND, OR, and NOT operators between words and phrases in each search line. In addition, the Operator drop-down list allows you to select the operation that is used between search lines (see more about Boolean searching below).
4. Add a New Line:
Advanced searches allow you to include a maximum of seven search criteria lines, which contain the following parameters: operator, field selector, search type, and search box.
5. Filters:
Allows you to narrow your results to a specific material type, language or date range. In the search results, you can include and exclude facets to filter your results further.
The Primo Research Assistant is a tool powered by Generative Artificial Intelligence, which allows you to explore academic content by asking questions in natural language.
Visit the section What is the Primo Research Assistant? to watch a demonstration video and to find answers to these questions:
- How does the Primo Research Assistant work?
- How can I ask a good question?
- What are the limitations of the Primo Research Assistant?
- Can I use the tool in my assessments?
Refine
Looking for something more specific? Use the following features to refine your search results:
The "Refine your results" section, appearing on the left side of the results page, contains a list of categories you can use to filter your results. By including and excluding criteria (such as date range, author/creator, or resource type), you can narrow the search to get more relevant results.
To filter your search results in Primo, follow these steps:
- Look through the list of filters to the left of your search results.
- Check the box to the left of a filter, then click on the Apply Filter pop-up box to refine by that criteria, e.g. select Articles to see the Library's article collection on your topic. You can select multiple filters before you click on the Apply Filter pop-up to save time when refining.
- Check the red box with a line through it to the right of the filter to exclude that criteria, e.g. choosing this option next to Book Reviews and selecting Articles will show articles available by the Library except for book reviews.
Refine my results

If you search the Library Catalogue and you are unable to find what you need in the SAE Library collection, click on the Expand my results link to extend your search beyond the SAE Library.
To learn how to request a Document Delivery, go to How do I request an article or chapter from another library?
If you know the title of the journal, select the Journal Search option from the top of the Primo page.

If you don't know the title try using the Journals by category facets on the left.

Need more search tips? Visit Search and Discover in the Research Basics guide.
Signing in to Primo provides a personalised experience and can be useful for research.
Sign in before you start searching to:
- request items as part of the Digitisation or Document Delivery services. (See Request & Suggest)
- save records & organise them with labels
- access your search history
- save searches

The sign-in option is located in the top right corner of the library search page. Scroll to see what you can do with library records, and see more options below to learn how to use records in your research.
Select the pin icon to the right of each search result to save the record or the checkbox to the left for multiple records.
You can set an alert for a saved search to receive email notifications when new resources are added to the SAE Library collection.
This is a great way to stay up to date with the latest resources in your discipline.
You will be notified via email of new resources that meet the criteria of your search.
To set a search alert:
- Ensure you're logged into Primo Search.
- Run and save a search.
- Select the bell icon in the prompt that appears at the top of the page to enable notifications for this search.

- You can access your saved searches in My Favourites. Toggle alerts on and off by selecting the bell icon to the right of each saved search.

Requesting items from the SAE print collection
If a journal or a book is available in the SAE library in print format, current students and staff can request an article or chapter from the item to be digitised and sent to them as a PDF.
Print resources from SAE can be identified in the library catalogue by the wording 'SAE Closed Reserve' (See more about the Closed Reserve here).
Whilst digitisation requests from SAE print collections aim to be processed within a 3-5 day period, this may be longer depending on demand.
Requesting items from other libraries
If an item is not available in the SAE Library collection, you may request a PDF of a chapter or an article via the document delivery service. The document delivery service is available to Australian staff members and students for teaching and research purposes.
Please be aware that copyright restrictions apply, and as a result, not all requests can be fulfilled.
Approved document delivery requests (from non-SAE libraries) will be supplied within 5-10 working days (depending on resource availability).
Suggest a resource for purchase
Current students and staff may suggest titles of new resources they would like to see available from the Library.
Librarians will consider the relevance of the resource and whether the resource falls within SAE Library Collection Development policy guidelines before purchasing.
All recommendations are considered, and those approved will be purchased as funds become available.
